Martin Luther King Jr. Projects

In my Kindergarten classroom two weeks ago, we learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and how he wanted our world to be at peace and to all get along regardless of skin color. We discussed how our skin color does not decide how we are as a person, but it is our actions that decide. We also discussed how boring our world would be if everythinggg was the same color: our skin, hair, eyes, clothes, EVERYTHING! We are all made different and that is what makes us special. One student even said that was because God made us the way we are: so true!

Here are two projects we did that maybe you can do with your kiddos next year!

We listened to an actual recording of MLK's "I have a dream" speech: we specifically listened to the part where he talked about his four children being judged by their character and not the color of their skin. We traced a brown and peach hand and laid them over a heart, depicting that we all can love one another regardless of our skin color.

I shared this poem and worksheet with you a couple of weeks ago and here are the finished products. Again, we discussed the importance of being who we are and that is what makes us special.

Did any of you have to work today? We were "off", meaning no kids but we did have a faculty retreat at this beautiful center for the disabled (where they learn to live and work: we had a tour, got to see the citizens work in their jobs, and we had a tasty lunch in their cafe where some of the citizens work: they also have a b-e-a-utiful nursery and I bought flowers for our front porch)!
