1st Week of Kindergarten

The first week has been a blast!

We started on a Wednesday (which I am forever grateful because I was dead tired by Friday). My kids are super quiet in the morning, I suppose they are still sleepy, but we dance and sing to get our blood moving, and then they head to P.E. around 8:55 and get even MORE adrenaline. This is where I spend the rest of the day trying to get them still. Ha! Oh, 5 year olds.

We did intro activities: a self portrait of ourselves on the first day, the Kissing Hand (if you do not know this story, read it! Super sweet), letter songs, and of course, Chicka Chicka boom boom. I'll take pictures of the projects we have done and post them up here. They are adorableee.

Thursday was my first experience with a Catholic Mass. Thank goodness I had 3 extra adults on hand to sit with my class (although starting this next Thursday, it will just be me and my aide to control SEVENTEEN 5 year olds during an hour-long Mass service: should be interesting). I'm glad I have the first one under my belt now. I know what to expect. We'll see how that goes too!

I'm really enjoying my class so far. Although by Friday, a few of them were showing their "true" colors ;) I think it's going to be a really fun year!

Kindergarten: Inservice

I know, I know. I didn't finish the house intro.

Because my life has taken a sudden shift: KINDERGARTEN. I am SO excited to share pictures :) Only... my room is not quite finished yet. You see, most of my teaching stuff was still in Dallas up until a month ago. We were still doing house stuff and youth events, so my classroom was the last thing on my mind. However, as soon as August hit, I got my rear in gear.

It's SO CLOSE to being done. My theme: We are WILD about Kindergarten! Jungle/animal print theme. So excited! Since it is a Catholic school, we are also required to have a "Religious" spot in our room/center. Mine is set up towards the back of the room in a corner, with the picture of St. Rose (I think), a crucifix, and age-appropriate Christian books.

It's really awesome to be able to work for a school where you know the true hearts of your co-workers, as well as hang signs such as "God is Love" and scripture verses around your classroom.

I am so extremely blessed because I have made a new friend, and I can already tell it's going to be a lasting friendship! Like me, she is also a non-Catholic, so our beliefs are similar (she, a Methodist; me, a Baptist). Not that "labels" matter, because we have talked to each other about our beliefs, our relationships with Christ, and how we feel about different issues in the religious/secular worls. It's AMAZING to have this type of friendship with someone!

As for actually starting school, that's a little bit of womp-womp going on. However, I think it will be a fun year (especially because I'm BACK in Kinder)!!!

First Home: Guest Bedroom Intro

Today, we will be doing the guest bedroom intro. This room is the closest to being done, but again, there is more that needs to be done.

I am going to leave the room white: it is a clean, refreshing color that can give guests the feeling of a calm/serene environment (with the help of neutral, natural textured accessories).

This is where I want the bed to go. I thought the windows were gorgeous on either side of the bed. Grant it, there is not a spot for a headboard, but I might add a third set of curtain panels or hang a piece of wrought iron art (you can see it on the bed).

Side of the room. I hung two inexpensive mirrors from Ikea. I also have a small table with a lamp and picture frame. I plan to add a small chair and a plant.

Front door. I have this GORGEOUS dried flower wreath from Target, but unfortunately, our front doors have a glass image on the front and the wreath makes it look awkward. So I hung it here! A little welcome to our guests to Casa de Johnson :)

First Home: Bedroom Intro

Today, I'm going to introduce you to our bedroom.

Mmm... it's a mixture of blues and deep chocolate browns, with a bit of cream thrown in for kicks. I adore this color combination. It is so relaxing and peaceful, kind of like I'm at a spa... (too much? no?)

This is standing in the middle of our bedroom looking out into our kitchen. There are white steps that go down into our bedroom. You can see the beautiful light blue (Benjamin Moore's First Snowfall) pop against the white trim (I'm ALL about white trim). We added brown/glass sconces on either side of the door to give more pizazz.

We have doors that lead out into our backyard (really it's just one door and the other is a fake door... Oh tricky, tricky contractors. We added dark brown blinds to give us privacy (and there is a perfect spot for Chloe to peek out of during the day). I added a deep chocolate brown curtain as well... Isn't it lush against the light blue and white? Mmm...

Our bedding... Oh, our bedding, our bedding. Target, circa 2009... a wedding gift I begged my mom to buy because it was on clearance, which everyone knows to mean that it is about to be discontinued. Luckily, she purchased it and the two throw pillows. The top throw pillow (blue w/brown detail) is from Bed, Bath, and Beyond (another fave location). We are needing two bedside tables: we want them to be the same structure and color, but different layout/set-up... I found THE perfect ones at Target (one for $90 and one for $100... just not sure if I can bring myself to it)! We already purchased our bedside lamps from Ikea for a whopping $15 (I think). Nate already has a stand-in bedside table until we purchase some... Chloe's crate, baha.

Another shot of my bedroom paradise. I want to make a headboard OR have a wall of curtains behind the bed (I saw the idea on www.bowerpowerblog.com under their "Our Crib" section. It is beautiful!) We will see what I come up with.

First Home: Kitchen Intro

I'm back with another room introduction: the kitchen!

I think this may be my favorite room in the whole house. It is in the shape of a "U", starting with the dining room, working its way into the cabinets/cookware/breakfast table, then finishing up with a small hallway to our bedroom.

I painted the room Benjamin Moore's "Horizon", which is a light gray, and I really like how it pops against the white trim (really, any paint against white trim pops)! This is a corner of the dining room that has shelving for our cookbooks, as well as Chloe's treats and whatnot. Look at her little face in that picture!!! (Also, the rooster is from Pier1 and was originally $40 and I got it for $10. Holler.)

This is my "fancy" section until I get a china hutch or buffet table for the dining room. It houses our china, as well as placemats, napkins, napkin rings. We also have our small appliances and pans in the bottom cabinets.

New refrigerator. Yum!

Window above the sink. I attempted to hem (with the stitch tape stuff... it's a little crooked, but it works).

All of our cabinets: we have new hardware installed and it makes the kitchen look completely different :) Plus we got a new stove!

The breakfast table area with windows looking out to our backyard. I got the floor-to-ceiling curtains from Ikea and absolutely adore them! They are even prettier when the sun shines through them.

Another shot of the curtains with my super-cute yellow artwork from Target.

The rest of the kitchen (I'm standing in the small hallway that leads to our bedroom). I really like my yellow "plant". It's a nice pop of color.

So there you have it, my spiffed up kitch. We are hoping to get an island (someday...) and then our dining room is completely empty (unless you count empty boxes and painting supplies). Hopefully we'll get that room up and running soon!
